THE MUSIC, THE PERFORMERS AND THEIR INTERPRETATION
By mid 15th century the extraordinary activity of the
Italian composers seems to fade away. Foreign artists, especially Flemish,
took the best part of the musical production. Native composers would
soon react, however, developing a genre that, from its more or less
popular roots, increasingly spread and became expressive and refined.
Thus was the frottola born, and with it other associated genres like
the barzelletta, the canzona, the ode, the
villanesca and a certain type of madrigale. In this way, the autoctonous
production of important composers like Tromboncino, Cara, Ruffo or Lando
existed side by side with that of Isaac, Rore, Busnois or Willaert.
This CD is a faithful reflect of all this: it explores the nacient frottola
and its development, the instrumental music, the heritage of the Flemish
chanson and the Italian music with influences of the traditional music.
All this is masterfully served with the velvety, sensual and passionate
voice of Roberta Invernizzi, one of the most important singers in the
early music scene of our day. The instrumental accompaniment comes from
the radiant, clear and beautiful sound of the Accademia Strumentale
Italiana: from the subtlety and expressive nuances of the viol consorts
to the irresistible colour of the mute cornet or the recorders, the
calm of the lute or the assertive accent of percussions. The direction
of a sensitive musician like Alberto Rasi make possible the sounding
miracle of this CD which, although in general prefers to present a repertoire
of an intimate and introspect nature, can also enjoy in dances of inimitable
freshness and delicacy. This is, no doubt, one of the best Renaissance
music CDs available.
